Policy

Sponsored content

None is running at launch. If it does, a reader should be able to tell without squinting. This policy is a working draft for legal review.

Working draft for legal review. This page is not a substitute for advice from qualified counsel and should be reviewed before the publication relies on it.

Label

Paid material will carry a visible label such as “Advertisement” or “Partner content” at the top, in the index, and in the newsletter if it appears there. The label is not a footnote and not a lighter grey than the headline can bear.

Separation

Sponsored material is not written by the editorial desk as news, and it is not given a NewsArticle record. It does not enter the funding tracker. It is not listed under Latest as if the desk had reported it. Advertisers do not approve reported copy, and they do not see a story before publication in exchange for spend.

What we will not sell

We will not sell a byline, a correction, or the omission of a sourced fact. We will not quote an audience number we have not measured in order to close a campaign.
